Inland South Carolina asks something different of a tree than the coast does. Ice loads a canopy vertically with weight it never grew to carry, and the limbs that fail under it are frequently the healthiest ones on the tree, because that is where the surface area is. Reading a canopy for that risk is a different skill from reading one for wind, and it is the skill this county actually needs.

Pines run tall and top-heavy on every rural parcel. And the older streets near the colleges are shaded by oaks big enough that what happens to them matters to the whole block.
